How to Devastate your Wardrobe

How to Devastate your Wardrobe

When the wet weather hits, there are so many different things to think about to keep your home running smoothly.  Getting on top of drying the never-ending laundry, watching the swimming pool overflow, keeping an eye out for pesky leaks and locating that ever elusive umbrella (which never seems to be around when needed!)

There’s one more thing we would like to add to your wet weather checklist and that is your shoes. When we step out on a rainy day, they inevitably get soaked, (unless you’re sporting some high fashion gumboots) and once we’re back inside our cosy homes, they can be quickly forgotten about.  We have had a few clients get caught out by putting wet shoes back in their closet, only to find a few weeks later, when they have pulled them out again – they have gone mouldy!

Apart from how disturbing this find would be, the real problem is when mould becomes active. Spores begin looking for other areas to spread, creating potential for more mould growth within your home. Not to mention, the devastating effects it can have on your beautiful clothes.  Once mould is trapped in the fabric it is nearly impossible to remove the stain.

  • MouldMen wanted to share some helpful tips for safely drying out your shoes during this rainy winter!
  • Leather shoes – be sure not to place these in front of a heat source, as this can damage them causing the moisture to leave too quickly and increase the chance of the leather cracking.  We suggest letting your shoes dry gradually at room temperature, preferably overnight or until all of the moisture has evaporated.

Runners or canvas shoes – pull the moisture from the inside of the shoe. This can be done with newspaper or a small dry towel. The key here is to draw the moisture out, therefore every hour or so replace the moist paper with dry paper.  Eventually the paper should absorb the excess moisture in your shoes. Depending on how soaked they are, this could take 2 hours or longer.

If mould is found in your wardrobe, be diligent with checking your clothes and other areas such as bathrooms and your laundry for signs of mould growth.  If in doubt call one of MouldMen’s Technicians for advice.  Not only can we remove the mould from your shoes, MouldMen can fog your property using our safe, efficient process which eliminates 99.998% of all airborne spores leaving your home healthy.
